Greenscreen Sea-Tex from Hunter Douglas is a sustainable eco-thread fabric made from recycled plastic ocean waste.

Discover more about this unique sustainable fabric and how it is helping reduce plastic pollution in our oceans.

Plastic Pollution

There is a conservative estimate that there are currently 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the world’s oceans with more added every day. This incredible amount of plastic waste is having a serious detrimental effect on the environment and marine ecosystems around the world.

Pollution along shoreline

Types of plastic waste found include cups, bottles, milk cartons and abandoned fishing nets. All of these items can poison or trap marine life from Dolphins to Whales. Plastic does not biodegrade quickly, often taking hundreds of years, so any plastic waste remains in the ocean for a very long time.

The 5 Gyres

The build up of plastic waste has also begun to accumulate in the five ocean gyres. A gyre is a large circulating system of wind-driven surface currents located across the world and include:

  • North Atlantic Gyre
  • South Atlantic Gyre
  • North Pacific Gyre
  • South Pacific Gyre
  • Indian Ocean Gyre

The 5 Gyres are continuing to collect plastic waste taking at least 10 years to cycle out again.

Floating plastic has become trapped within these gyres and is estimated to take at least 10 years to cycle back out again.

Clean Up Efforts

Volunteers around the world, including the U-Turn project and Water Alliance, are tackling this growing issue through organised cleanups of shorelines and coastal communities. Their efforts aim to remove and recycle plastic and other debris, preventing this waste from reentering the ocean.

A greater awareness on the global plastic waste problem and improved recycling facilities have also helped but there is still a long way to go.

Sustainable Roller Blinds Fabric

In our industry, Hunter Douglas has invested in creating a new eco-thread Greenscreen Sea-Tex. The Greenscreen Sea-Tex is made from recycled plastic and re-purposed for sustainable roller blinds fabric. It does this by using an innovative high performance eco-thread called FLX Yarn.

FLX yarn was created by the engineering company Bionic. It is formed by heating and spinning dozens of strands of recycled plastic together, which is then combined to make up the Sea-Tex fabric.

FLX Yarn is created by heating and spinning dozens of strands of recycled plastic.

FLX yarn is strong and versatile, with lots of excellent qualities. It is flame retardant, PVC and halogen free and also has a 2-3% openness factor to provide efficient heat retention within any home.

There are five standard Sea-Tex colours including:

  • Graphite
  • Haze
  • Sand
  • Pearl
  • White

There are also custom options available on request.
