With so many sample books to look through and ideas to be had, fabric selection can be a daunting task for anyone. We have put together some helpful advice to provide you with the best start to your fabric journey.
Decide Contemporary or Traditional
Determining your home’s decor and interior style between contemporary or traditional will help narrow your fabric search criteria. A lot of our fabric collections tend to be either more classic or modern in feel, so knowing which direction you would like your design to take will immediately streamline your search.
Anyone who’s asked to see fabric books knows there are always lots of different designs to browse through and paths to take! The thing to remember is that design is always subjective, what works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa, so choosing a suitable design is a personal undertaking that will inevitably take some time to get right.
Despite this though, browsing the different designs is always a lot of fun!
Interior Design Context
Context makes all the difference. By already knowing the specific requirements your fabric will need to deliver, you can make key decisions about the fabric type before opening a single sample book. This can range from deciding on a practical fabric that can be blackout lined to keep unwanted light out or fun designs to brighten up a child’s playroom.
By determining the purpose of the fabric you can better inform your design decisions from the start and focus on the right fabric collections.
Fabrics for Curtains, Blinds or Furnishings
Whether you are thinking of curtains, blinds or other furnishings for your home, by deciding which of these products you would like early on this will help shape your potential fabric options. This is as some fabric ranges are better suited for certain products over others and some are simply not always available for each product type.
Fabric costs can be quite expensive so always be mindful of your design project’s budget when browsing. Budget doesn’t have to be limiting either though, as there are lots of quality fabrics in all price ranges and you may be able to compromise on price elsewhere.
